The Return of the King: J.R.R. Tolkien

“Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.”

The Return of the King is the last and final part of the famous The Lord of the Ring Series by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book concludes the story of the ring which started in The Hobbit.

My Experience reading it(Unpopular Opinion)

I don’t really know how to start writing about it after finally concluding the book. Both the book and Middle earth are widely loved in the world of fantasy. Even the movies are quite highly rated. Yes, people say that it is very slow. But they still can’t stop appreciating the characters and world-building.

I never have issues with slow books. On the contrary, I love slow books, where the author invests time in building the world, characters, and the storyline. I like to get invested in books, in characters, and that’s one of the reasons I love big books and series more than standalone books, especially for the fantasy genre.

I have tried watching the movies almost 10 years back but I was so bored that I can’t even finish a single movie. But that was 10 years back. My tastes have matured over time and of course, it’s a general knowledge that books are better than movies. So, even if I didn’t enjoy the movie I was pretty sure I was going to love this book. But how wrong I was.

There is only one word to describe my reading experience BORED!!

From the first book itself, I got this feeling that I am not going to enjoy this book. But I still gave it a fair chance. And I also pride myself on being a finisher. So, yes I finished the whole series. But I really failed to see what is it in there for which it is loved so much.

After going through this slow & dragged journey along with Frodo and many others I hoped at least the book will have some amazing ending which will blow my mind and I will eat my words for the previous books and will declare my long-lost love for it. But the end was so anti-climatic that it really blew my mind in a different way.

I want to say sorry to all the Tolkien fans. I really tried to at least like this book. Don’t hate me for that. But I failed to see what you guys see. Please take it as a personal opinion & experience. Do let me know your opinions in the comments even if you disagree with me.
