The Graveyard Book: Neil Gaiman

The Graveyard Book is a middle-grade fantasy novel. This book explores the adventures of Nobody ‘Bod’ Owens who is adopted by the ghosts of a graveyard after his family is murdered. He was given access to ways of the graveyard and learning the ways of the dead while growing up there.

Living in the graveyard, Bod faces many adventures and dangers like Sleer and ghouls. He also forms some unlikely friendships with a graveyard witch, a young girl whose parents thoughts him as her imaginary friend. And there is also a danger in the living world. The murderer who killed his parents is looking for him to finish the unfinished business.

My experience reading this book

I heard this book on Audible where it is narrated by Neil Gaiman himself and I would say it heightened my reading experience with this book.

I love the writing style of Neil Gaiman, funny and whimsical. The characters and the world-building is unique and lovable. The storyline never gets boring or dragged. Each chapter kind of follows a new adventure and yet always sticks to the main plot. There are enough spooky elements to keep you engaged but it never goes over the top.

The end of the book was quite emotional and I really didn’t expected it. But it really warmed my heart.

Conclusion

It is very rare that I enjoy a middle grade book as an adult but this book is beautifully written. I would definitely recommend it for a fun and light reading.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
