Day 26: The Power Of A Mantra

“Erase the false impressions from your mind by constantly saying to yourself, I have it in my soul to keep out any evil, desire, or any kind of disturbance—instead, seeing the true nature of things, I will give them only their due. Always remember this power that nature gave you.”

MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS, 8.29

As the title may suggest this post is not about the chanting of mantras prophesied by Hinduism or Buddhist culture. This post is about daily positive affirmations and making them a mantra of your life. Hindus or Buddhists know the power of this unique meditative technique and hence it is a major part of their culture.

To embody the principle of Stoicism, what Ryan Holiday or Marcus Aurelius is telling us to make our daily mantra, when we feel false impressions, distractions, or the crush of everyday life upon us is something like this.

“I have the power within me to keep that out. I can see the truth.”

It might not be exactly the same, but one can build up along the same line.

Why daily positive affirmations work?

As mentioned by James Allen in his book ‘As a man thinketh‘, you don’t attract in your life what you want, but attract what you are. Our life turns out to be as how we think it is in our subconscious. This concept is also shared by Joseph Murphey in his bestselling book ‘The Power of Subconscious mind‘. In this book, he has explained how our subconscious mind controls our life and we can completely turn our life 180 degrees by training it correctly.

The kind of thoughts you cultivate in your mind, is the kind of person & life you build for yourself. By repeating a positive affirmation daily, we imprint that thought in our subconscious and slowly that thought becomes our reality.
